TKANG SANYA RESORT: CRAFTING A SERENE HAVEN ON THE COAST

As a retreat from the bustling tourist zones of Hnan Island in southern China, TKANG Sanya emerges as an idyllic coastal escape. Designed by NeriHu Design and Research Office, this Tribute Portfolio Resort consists of two distinct L-shaped structures totaling nearly 900,000 square feet with 343 guest rooms.

The layout was intentionally influenced by the unique topography of its site, which was split by a road leading to the sea. To overcome the challenge of limited beach access, the construction team ingeniously excavated under the road, positioning the first three floors of this resort underground.

We faced a challenge in rsing the view, says Lyndon Neri, one of the partners at NeriHu Design and Research Office. This led to creating an extensive ground floor base where all public amenitiessuch as restaurants, facilities, and a ballroomare nestled. This ingenious design ensures that the guest rooms begin from the fourth level enjoy sweeping views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes.

From above, TKANG Sanya presents the illusion of an ancient Chinese walled city with its central water courtyard, which exts both the sense of space and creates a mesmerizing effect of sky reflections. This feature is complemented by skylights and open courtyards that frame the sky in a manner akin to a box sculpted into rectangular forms with openings that lead guests through different sensory experiences.

The arrival lobby unfolds as an intricate series of open courtyards, offering views of both public spaces and the horizon. These apertures are designed not just for glimpses of water but also for showcasing various restaurants within the lobby while allowing visitors to enjoy the sky above, layering multiple visual elements throughout the space.

Exterior corridors rered in a white and wood palette connect the buildings' public areas with guest rooms that start on the fourth floor. This design decision enhances the tropical architectural style prevalent in Hnan, characterized by its open-r layout and skylights.

Inside TKANG Sanya's rooms, a nod to local Hnan architecture is evident through simple furnishings, traditional pressed bamboo screens, artwork inspired by the island's indigenous Li people, and textiles that reflect their unique cultural heritage. The resort has been thoughtfully designed for accessibility, especially considering its demographic appeal to seniors with wider spaces, halls without strs replaced by ramps, larger furniture pieces, integrated handrls on walls, and sliding bathroom doors in guest rooms.

is a building that seamlessly bls architecture and landscape, offering guests an immersive experience from their initial steps into the property. As Neri states, It's not just a mere form or enclosed structure; it's activated through its programs and spatial qualities.
