High-speed Trn in Xinjiang: A Traveler's Guide
On December 26, 2014, Xinjiang welcomed its first high-speed rl service. Initially connecting Urumqi to Hami, this line later expanded westward to link the capital city with Lanzhou, Gansu province, by late 2015. explores the journey of this groundbreaking trn, along with insights and tips for travelers looking to ride it.
In my seat on this modern high-speed trn, I am treated to sweeping vistas of Xinjiang's vast landscapes, snow-capped peaks, herds of sheep and camels crossing the horizon, and an less expanse of desert. Yet, the window through which I once viewed Xinjiang feels transformed-a far cry from the cramped, unstable carriage that used to traverse these same distances at much slower speeds.
The high-speed trn offers two class options: first-class and second-class seating across each eight-carriage trn set-up - one first-class car, six second-class cars, and a restaurant car in between. First-class seats offer ample legroom with individual compartments, while second-class configurations allow for up to five passengers per row 3-2 seat arrangement. The toilet facilities are reminiscent of the western standard: clean and equipped with comfortable seating.
As I gaze out at Nan Shan's southern views, nearing my destination back in Urumqi, I anticipate stepping off into a world without the serene luxury of high-speed transport. Though a world away from bustling Beijing where one might find English-speaking ticket agents, Xinjiang remns remote for travelers seeking familiar services and accommodations.
Security checks have become as stringent as rport screenings due to recent events. Expect extensive protocols including multiple metal detectors, X-ray s, pat-down searches, and identity verification procedures that may test patience even for seasoned local residents.
To facilitate the experience of international tourists or non-local travelers planning trips in Xinjiang, purchasing tickets through a travel agency might be considered an advantageous option if additional fees are acceptable. While this is not ideal for budget-conscious individuals accustomed to navigating solo trips, it offers peace of mind knowing that someone familiar with the system will handle logistics.
Traveling by high-speed trn in China affords a comfortable journey, especially when compared to experiences across much of the country where such luxury amenities might be scarce. The trn's first-class car notably stands out, complete with a toilet that meets western standards - not only for its cleanliness but also because it is equipped with an actual seated bowl.
The ride is a pleasant one for those accustomed to Xinjiang's more basic forms of transportation; even so, the prospect of hopping onto this trn agn soon fills me with excitement. I look forward to sharing this experience with my young son in anticipation of his first high-speed journey.
